A Clean Bathroom – How to Keep One

Are you ashamed of your bathroom? Do you hope no one drops by and asks to use it? A clean bathroom is attainable. Even if you don’t have time to spend scrubbing it.

I wanted a clean bathroom. I really did. But there were times I would walk into our bathroom multiple times a day (it’s the only one in this two-bedroom trailer) and groan. “I have to clean it again.” But then I would walk out having not changed anything.

Does this sound like you? Toothpaste on the counters. Water streaks on the doors. Dust behind the seat of a toilet that had been used one too many times. It doesn’t have to be this way! You do not have to feel ashamed of your bathroom any longer.

I started making small changes in my interactions with my bathroom and not only does it stay clean most of the time, I never even have to make a slot in my weekly house cleaning to scrub the bathroom. So what’s the secret?

Do a Little Every Day

Every night, I follow this routine. I brush my teeth, shower, comb out my hair and then wipe off the counter with a hand towel. After that, I hang out a fresh hand towel and head off to bed.

On the nights I wash out my son’s cloth diapers, I squeeze a little toilet bowl cleaner in, swish it around and flush.

As a result, I never have to actually scrub the bathroom. Soap scum never builds up and the toilet never looked dirty.

Keep the Cleaning Supplies Close

If you keep the cleaning products somewhere other than where you use them, (in this case the bathroom) chances are you will never use them.

I have a small basket under the sink with toilet bowl cleaner, multi-purpose spray (without ammonia), and a couple of rags. Keeping your cleaning supplies close makes it easy to wipe down anything that catches your eye right the moment you see it.

Wipe Down the Shower while You are in It

Spending 2 extra minutes in the shower can make all the difference in the level of scum your shower gathers. Keep a multi-purpose cleaner or this DIY shower spray and a scrub sponge in your shower. I like to spray it twice a week as I’m climbing in, let it sit while I wash off, and then quickly wipe down the walls and glass door before I get out.

Gone are the days I would spend an hour in the bathroom, scrubbing, trying to make it shine! Now my bathroom stays perpetually clean by doing a little bit every day. Also, my hands thank me for not having to scrub till the room shines.
