A Cleaner that Works Hard

When I first got married, it didn’t take long for me to realize I was scrubbing my shower and sink… a lot. We used handmade soap to wash our hands. The only thing I have ever found to dislike about “lye soap” is the residue it can leave behind. Homemade soap leaves a thin film on the sink bowl and if you don’t wipe it down regularly, and I’m talking nightly if you have a bunch of people in the house, it can build up pretty quickly. Resulting in a soap scum that doesn’t just wipe off. Something that to this day I despise is scrubbing the sink basin and shower with a stiff brush. I needed something to help me cut the time. And the back strain. Enter the only scum remover you will ever need!

It’s hard-working. It’s cheap. And best of all it actually works!

So what is this wonderful cleaner? I’m glad you ask!

The Best Scum Remover. Ever.

  • 1 Tablespoon Dawn dish soap

  • 1 cup Distilled vinegar

  • 1 cup Water

Mix all ingredients together. Make sure you label your bottle!

When using this scum remover, spray on the soap residue and let sit for a few minutes then wipe clean, rinsing as necessary.

That it. That’s what I have used for almost 4 years now. But why does it work?

Dawn Dish Soap

According to this article on the Hunker,

“Dish soap works quickly to remove dirt, grime, and grease from slick, porous, or other common surfaces. Grease cutting dish soap works to lift and separate grease, oil and grime by surrounding, breaking down and suspending the unwanted substances in water so that they can be washed away quickly.”

So dish soap, being a solvent, will break down, pick up, and remove dirt particles from the surface.

White Vinegar

White Vinegar is proven to be antibacterial and antifungal as stated on Active KYDs

“It is naturally antibacterial (kills bacteria) and antifungal (kills fungus) but not all types, and not by 99.99%. Add a little to your next batch of all-purpose vinegar and water cleaning solution for its fresh scent and an antibacterial boost.”

White vinegar is an acid, namely acetic acid, which can safely be used up to 25% strength in cleaning applications but is more commonly used at 5-10% strength. Because it is an acid, care should be taken when using it on stonework, decorative steel, and the protective film on some devices’ screens. It can also damage hardwood floors.
